I Am Not Starfire :

Hi Hi Y’all,

There’s been some buzz about one of DC’s newer graphic novel: I Am Not Starfire. Here’s the thing… I really wanted to like this more and not just find myself agreeing with the negativity around it.

But, I didn’t….

There are so many things I found wrong with this graphic novel. There are issues of self insert characters, poor story line, poor writing and disregard of previous ‘still cannon’ source material. It is the first and last two points I want to focus on, because problematic story lining and writing of graphic novels isn’t my forte and doesn’t seem as much as a problem to me as the other two points.

I’m going to start first with the disregard of previous source material. There is no problem with making up a new character for a comic. It is pretty standard to create random children and family members over the various arcs. However, in this case Starfire has a child with beloved DC hero Nightwing that bares too large of a shadow to be overlooked. The comic introduces you to “Mandy” instead of the heavily desired and asked for Mar’i Grayson.

Even if you compare these two characters on the surface you find problematic similarities. Mar’i is a black-haired and confident half Tamaranian. She is a member of the Outsiders and grew up without her mother’s shadow. Instead, she faced issues with her father and grandfather, the great and wonderful Batman. She was a character that was confident and played the role of Titan leader well. In contrast, Mandy is a fake black-haired young girl with weight issues, self confidence issues, no super powers, loner tendencies and a hard core emo phase. They are two drastically different characters for similar names and hair color- a point of connection that drives fans mad.

I agree that on the surface there is always room for both forms of superhero children stories but the Mar’i character was so beloved and desired that it makes the comparison on Mandy’s flaws even worse. Which, as an overweight young adult makes the self image issues even worse. Further, the desire to continuously keep up with a trend of making ‘relevant’ stories for youth is a huge pitfall trap for the character.

When reading the comic their was nothing I found I liked about her. Instead, she mostly got my pity, worry and lots of frustration. Even her final come to terms moment to fight for her mother just feels so contrived and annoying. You see no familiar bonds with a mother character that is heavily invested in bonds.

This all brings us to the main issue I have with this as a fellow writer: she is one of the worst examples of a published self-insert character I have seen in awhile and I am one of the queens of making self-insert characters. I really hate to agree with trolls on this issue but if you compare the physical appearance of Mandy to her illustrator and writer you cannot help but assume that these were her struggles and pent up feelings due to their similar appearances. Which sucks to even have to point out because if it was well done we could simply say so what.

It makes me feel crappy as a writer. My main DC Comics fan fiction character was actually the creation of me working through my own problems and feelings. I made that conscious choice of such a character but even I know that if I ever wanted to polish that character I’d have to remove myself from it. They have to be their own people and stand on their own without me being attached to it. When I read the graphic novel the first thing I did was flinch at my own writing choices. Was it okay for me to use my stories for not just tale telling but to work through thoughts and feelings?

Then it made me annoyed at her for making such a self insert character during the oppertunity to make either a Mar’i story or any other story then what we got.

All in all, when I have the moment to go back and update the DC Fan Fiction drafts I have up I will. Because….. I feel like I’d wallow in disappointment if I created self-insert characters that revealed themselves like Mandy.

Also, I’m pretty sure I’m never recommending this graphic novel to anyone.

Watching TV & Thoughts :

Hi Hi Y’all,

Early today I read the spoilers for one of the manhwas I was reading- The Way To Protect The Female Lead’s Older Brother. It had such a great start and I loved the premise. Then I read the spoilers and I become the classic me of ‘whyyyyyy‘. The sad part was that I really needed something amazing to keep me happy. It’s one of my ways I fight my depression. But seeing in my mind ruined awesomeness the wall that holds back the floodgates shakes.

Then I saw the newest episode of WandaVision. It was the first Marvel Tv show I was actually enjoying. It’s not like I was expecting much from the next episode but this time my expectations were destroyed in a good way. It was amazing! The entire series has been great. Whoever has shit to say about the ‘slow-burn’ is nothing but an asshole. Truly, I the notorious DC is better advocate is declaring that Marvel won this round. Everything from the sitcom reaction of grief from Wanda and the potential of Vision returning to the main MCU.

BUT EVEN BETTER THAN THAT… BILLY & TOMMY HAVE ARRIVED.

In case, you don’t know they are actually really amazing young heroes in the Marvel comics. Billy, codename Wiccan, is a gay icon whose powers may be stronger than his own mother. Tommy, codename Speed, is fast like his Uncle Pietro.

The four characters are some of my favorite heroes in the comics and seeing their successful introduction and potential within the MCU is fluttering my little black heart. The idea of a Young Avengers is exciting, even more so if we get a Kid Loki. It is like a substance stronger than cement at binding my wall back together.

My coping method is working again~

I got some inspiration back and I feel like I can do my thang. My writing thang. That one thang people say is still my talent. That one thang people say has stayed with me through everything.

Needless to say, I am very glad for WandaVision. I may even finally remember that there are things I am good at and can do.

What a morning,

Time Management Problems :

Hi Hi Y’all,

I am sitting here in the laundry room, trying to multi-task, and decide how I should fix my recently worse than normal time management problems. I find the fact that an annoying building resident has decided to open and spread out three bags of laundry over the table I am sitting at a highly distracted and detractor in this mission of mine. Never the less, I shall work my hardest to execute a decent and productive plan for the rest of my summer and its expected achievements. Let us begin with the goals, shall we:

  1. Finish the updated Chronicles: A Tale of Shadow & Light
  2. Have the print version out sometime within June
  3. Publish the ebook version of my poetry book, Confessions of a Teenage Poet out within a month’s time.
  4. Begin a steady schedule of Podcast episodes
  5. Since once a day doesn’t seem to be happening, at least three blog posts a week with a hopeful set days for each
  6. Steady and predicably timed updates of Fan Fiction & an increase of Fan Portal chapters
  7. Major desired updates of all my sites
  8. The introduction of a proper beginning of my publication house, Knights Publications
  9. The completed draft of the web novel series, made with the brilliant outremusings, H x E Volume 1
  10. Lose at least 20 lbs
  11. Get a B- in my Japanese course and return in a semi-successful manner to a McGill student.
  12. If I have extra money, and possibly raised my credit score, I would love to finally get beginning level decent equipment so I can start streaming again.
  13. Finish copyrighting all of my works and tittles
  14. Becoming even more organized within my life and increasing my adorable DIY projects
  15. Save money for a trip either this upcoming winter break or next summer
  16. Hold my first meet & greet or book launch party in Montreal/ get in more book stores as a ‘local author’ ; possibly without the need to dress up and present myself as the stereotypical image of an ‘indie’ author.
  17. To work on my efforts towards friendships and going out. My penssion for social isolation does unsubjectively need to be corrected.
  18. To increase the time and attention I put towards taking care of my mind and body’s health.
  19. To challenge myself to not only dress up in nicer clothes but the clothes I always wanted to wear and was too scared to before.
  20. TO KICK ASS AND LOVE MYSELF.

So, we can break down a few of these I think. The first is a simple explanation of the draft site The Crows Nest Co (Co as the regular site was already taken by some bastard who was considerably inconsiderate of my personal affairs). My podcast is amply named the Crows Nest as to highlight my peculiar and quirky nature. As for themes and topics, season one is set to be a mixed bag of testing material. Not too complicated at the moment. The next break downs I believe would then be my fan fiction page and my fan portal page. I seriously need to keep up with the random requests for a steady schedule of star trek and harry potter based episodes. Further, I would like to increase my pretty much finished 8-9 Volumes of the Maou-sama no Machizukuri! ~Saikyou no Danjon wa Kindai Toshi~ . Next, I would like the catch up of my Marvel and DC related stories and images. They seem to catch quite some attention and I have both fear and hopes for their possible attention by the respected comic companies. Next, I think I have failed at properly showing the support and love towards Chinese web novels such as Against the Gods, Douluo Dalu, Tales of Demons and Gods and 1/2 Prince. Lastly, to focus on the updates of Hakai no Miko, Overlord, Re: Monster in my sites series updates (possible Shadow Hunters as well due to its rising popularity). While, my fan portal just needs an increase of my lovely tender fans not only commenting on my site and social media more but asking for such works.

The only thing I wish to break down is the works of @Outremusings. She is a frequent co-author on web novel series and fan fiction series such as: Star Trek, Hp 1, Hp 2, H x E and AHS. In addition, I have the honor of featuring on her new podcast series and promote her new website, undisclosedmusings.com.

As for these goals, if you have any questions, comments or concerns let me know. Because, trust me, I have a shit ton of them myself.

P.s. I also really need to figure out previous page and next page options don’t I?

Marvel- Endgame :

Hi Hi Y’all

It’s no secret to anyone that in a rousing debate of DC vs Marvel I will always argue the greatness of DC comics. However, I think we all know that cinematically Marvel has been killing it these last few years (and that’s including how over super hero movies some of us are.)

I was forced to see the first part by friends and I can say I wasn’t all that impressed. Besides the major squeals of seeing all the characters come together the pacing felt off, rushed and awkward. The story line didn’t draw me in the way I was expecting and it definitely felt like the whole thing was just made to show epic movie effects of Hero vs. Thanos.

HOWEVER, Endgame was very different. I have no idea how to do that tab that covers up spoilers so DO NOT read the part below if you haven’t seen it and don’t want spoilers. DO NOT. I have separated the sections!

*********************************************************************

Endgame thoughts & spoilers

I will not say Endgame was perfect movie. It was definitely better than part 1 though. The pacing and story made a lot more sense in the massive part of the movie being a huge battle. AND THE BATTLE WAS AMAZING. When I saw my Black Panther cast walk out first I was so hyped. Shuri for the win~ Then when all the portals opened from Doctor Strange I was like this is great. We are getting the arrival of almost every character of the movie series so far!!! [ Minus of course those who died already: ‘Loki’, ‘Black Widow’, ‘Vision’, ‘Quicksilver’ and ‘Yondu’ ] The only disappointment I really had with the battle was not getting good views of those who were fighting between our lovely space crew and a reveal that Loki is indeed alive (whether he fought or not he is our beloved god of mischief!).

HERE COMES THE MAJOR SPOILER-REMINDER TO JUMP AHEAD! Even I, who was completely non-invested in the Marvel universe, cried at the end.  When it comes to the comics, pre-Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man was a different (more boring) character. However, the comics shifted along with the movies and the character got much more interesting, mostly because it became more like Robert Downey Jr. You could say that out of all the heroes Marvel introduced the starting hero Robert Downey Jr (cough * Iron Man* cough) was always a stand out.

I found his solo movies good but not spectacular, However, every time he featured in another movie Iron Man really shined as a character. The character had wit, sarcasm and a sort of anti-hero like vibe. Iron Man consistently went head to head with the goody two shoes and the controversial political bodies. He exhibited what it meant to be in a morally grey area and have to make the best decisions you can in a moment. My favorite part of him was how much everyone thought he would never be the main hero at the end of every event. Even when he proved himself in New York the idea was still Captain America or Thor.

He was probably the character I was most invested in and he died. The character I wished for more than anything (especially, after seeing his daughter) to survive died. Once again, it was him – the starter, the beginning, the sarcastic asshole- who made the last sacrificial move. As a writer, I had to say that was a brilliant move. The beginner was the ender. The character revealed its complete development and the whole universe had to acknowledge what Tony Stark really was ( the movie could have given him a statue though).

As a comic book lover and a viewer though, I was torn up inside. I actually cried in the theater. One of the characters I most identified with made the choice I think I would make and got the result that I expected to happen. I couldn’t help but cry that it was the human being who used his brain to get more powerful was the ultimate savior. As much as I love overpowered crazily gifted heroes the ones who always inspire me the most are the ones who are just people. It’s great to be sparkly and all but that’s not real even in their universe. A guy who was lucky to born into a wealthy family used his opportunities to make even more opportunities. Other people got to benefit and grow from them and in the eyes of the world grew past him. But to me, the man who provided the opportunities, he was a silent-ish guide and a person who no matter his flaws would make the hard call at the end of the day is the best character out there. At the very least, He should of been more worthy than Captain America to at least pick up that hammer once.

Alright, I’ll end spoilers here.

*********************************************************************

So, my recommendation is that you’ll probably enjoy the movie and should go see it.

Life Updates & Story Ideas:

Hi hi y’all,

I was sitting at my computer and was dying in the agony of having nothing to watch when the odd suggestion of Blood Ties came across my screening. I’m not going to lie, after binging the two seasons I have many comments. Is this a 90s show? It feels SUPER 90s. Why is the tension between Henry and Vicki written so awkwardly but still makes me rage about them not having SEX yet! Henry was objectively (even with awkward lines and plots) very yummy. Also why is your relationship with Mike so awkward? Will his new female partner learn the truth and handle it without trying to kill Henry like he did? Or Vicki? Why does Coreen have such awful taste and horrible luck with men? Again, I’d take a Henry.

But, it is more important to push these aside for a moment and remember that when it comes to me and dead/dying shows I immediately wonder about remakes. If I was to resurrect Blood Ties then what should be done?

Here is my rough remake version for 2019 peeps:

(1) Change Vicki to be a uni student that has a dead family member who was a cop. Have her going blind become a more prominent point in the series since TV has started to FINALLY get a bit better about showcasing that.

(2) Make Mike be an older childhood friend who is already a well known or great young cop.

(3) Coreen should be younger and less super goth looking. This isn’t 90s cliche moments.

(4) Keeping Henry as he was is fine just give him better lines.

(5) Just in general be better about plot. The monsters and flow got a bit… WEIRD towards the end.

BUT NONE OF THIS MATTERS SINCE I JUST REMEMBERED IT’S BASED OFF A BOOK. Oh well~

Moving on, I also recently saw Shazam. It was good. The flaws were covered up by the fact that having a good DC movie in awhile was a shock, having an actor who played a child well instead of being weird, a well assembled support cast and the hint of the SHAZAM FAMILY AT THE END!

That also got me thinking… I need to be better about my writings (time was, commitment wise and aspiration wise).

One day I don’t want to just see my books on shelves, but TV shows I’ve made or movies I’ve helped write. I want to stand as a creator that excels in their craft.

Soooooo….Basically….I guess I’m saying… I’m back?
